The Rebels

      by Simon Dyson

The rebels had been barricaded in the captured Imperial Bunker for days and still held their hostage Commissar Mann. Any imperial attack would result in the assassination of the Commissar. The previous day when the last rebel outpost had been vanquished, just before the Commissar had been captured the imperial forces had been fortunate enough to capture a rebel who appeared to have top level clearance in the bunker. The imperials had immediately called for Lepere, a callidus assassin who was now taking the identity of the rebel using his polymorhine.
Once the Polymorphine had finished its job Lepere got to work. The plan was to gain access to the perimeter fence by showing the captured rebels access card and claiming to have escaped from the imperial force with knowledge of their plans. Lepere gave his story and the sentry immediately got on his comm-net to some official in the bunker. Lepere saw a camera on the side of the bunker panning around to get him in view. He heard a voice informing one of the sentries to escort the rebel to the command room in the bunker. As he was escorted by the sentry he saw that the camera was panning to follow them. As they reached the doorway they were out of site of the camera, Lepere quickly scanned around to see if there was another. No! Stupid rebels! The sentry took a step forward and began to type in an access code to access the bunker. Lepere removed one of his concealed poison blades and just as the sentry finished typing the code thrust the blade into the base of the sentries neck. The poison was instant and the sentry collapsed to the ground. The security computer finished checking his ID and the door opened with a swish. Lepere left the sentries body hidden in the doorway.
His mission now was to vanquish the rebel forces and rescue the Commissar. Two rebels were sitting at a computer console ahead. Lepere took the first with a poison blade causing the second to whirl round in response. Lepere was ready and his fist met the guards face with perfect precision. The yelp released by the rebel as he fell limp to the floor alerted two guards up a stairway. Lepere knew he was safe to use his weapons with no discretion as the walls of the bunker were soundproof. As the guards turned the corner at the bottom of the stairs they were met by a volley of explosive shells from Leperešs pistol. The explosion was so great that the computer consoles were completely destroyed. The lifeless bodies of the guards were stretched near the console, one whose head was nearly separated from the neck by the numerous shots he had received. Quick as lightening Lepere ran up to the second floor where he was met by a door. He swiped the stolen access card and the door opened with a whirr.
On the other side a guard spun around, and there he fell, pierced with three Phase Sword wounds. The guard uttered a cry of pain as he fell and a rebel rushed from an adjacent room to assist him. Lepere turned round, plunged his sword into the rebels neck just below the jaw, and then, firing his pistol again, blew his head to pieces, the fragments sticking against the opposite wall. Another rebel followed him. Lepere fired on him leaving non explosive bullets buried deep in his lungs. As he was falling, mortally wounded, a sword stroke cut open his forehead deeply, and exposed the skull. The room was a mere pool of blood. Lepere saw a thick plated door with an armour plated window ahead. He looked through and saw what could only be the Governor, and he was in the presence of the Commissar. As a result of the soundproof walls the Governor knew nothing of the assassins access to the bunker. Lepere swiped his card and quickly hopped back behind a wall as the door opened. Just as planned this lured the Governor away from the Commissar as he heard the door open. As he walked out of the door he saw the dead bodies of his rebels littering the floor and immediately reached for his mini comm-net attached to his belt. It was knocked from his hand as a hand clamped firmly across his mouth.
"Your crimes are at an end rebel" Lepere hissed in his ear. "The Emperor deems you unworthy and you are hereby removed from office." The last thing the Governor saw was the blue flicker of the Phase Sword as Lepere drew it across his neck. Lepere called for Imperial reinforcements to cleanse the bunker of all further resistance, the Commissar was now safe!

      End.
