Got something to say? If you have a comment about something you've read here, or if you'd like to contribute something of your own, please let us know! Have a personal kickball anecdote, a question, or a comment about last week's game? We want to hear from you. You can drop us a line anytime.

Take Note! Schedule Changes!

When kickball and reality collide, the schedule takes a hit. So there's been some minor changes to the finals schedule. We added a week to the schedule at no additional cost to you, the descriminating kickballer, and we have put a down week between our semifinals and our finals. So those of you with the lofty aspirations of seeing the post season (and that should be everyone since even last place gets a shot), please take note of the schedule changes: Semis are on Oct. 6th starting a little earlier than usual to accomodate the dense kickball schedule (7pm). Finals are Oct. 20th at the normal start time of 7:30pm. So the 13th of October, there is no official games.

This schedule helps to accomodate the bi-divisional players who have competing schedules with Hollywood's finals dates. You're still screwed if you have to play Oct 6th because Hollywood will have some semis that night as well, but you will be able to attend each finals night as Hollywood's is the 19th.

Which brings me to a break down of the post season schedule. It will work as such:

Game 1 on Oct 6th will be 5th place visiting at 4th place home. This game will start, as mentioned before , at 7pm. The loser of this game will have to suffer the ill-fated "last place" title. The winner will advance to Game 3.

Game 2 on Oct 6th will be 3rd place visiting at 2nd place home. This game will start at 8pm (or after Game 1). The winner of this game will advance to the championship game. The loser will play in the consolation game.

Game 3 on Oct 6th will be the winner of Game 1 visiting the 1st place team at home. This game will start at 9pm (or after Game 2). The winner goes to championship, the loser to consolation. You may notice here that the winner of Game 1 will have to play TWICE on this night. Them's the breaks.

Then, two full weeks after these games are played, on Oct 20th:

The Consolation Game will be played between the loser of Game 2 visiting at the loser of Game 3. This game will start at 7:30pm. The winner is 3rd place, the loser is 4th place.

The Championship Game will be played between the winner of Game 2 visiting at the winner of Game 3. This game will start at 8:30pm or after the Consolation Game. The winner is the first champion of Dogtown Division and the loser is 2nd place.

In addition to this, the schedule shows a couple weeks out of November. These dates show the WAKA Nationals President's Cup dates. November 5th is the regionals here in California. Our championship team has the option to go to these regionals to represent Dogtown Division. Two weeks later on November 19th is the Presdient's Cup in Washington DC. The winner of the Regionals gets to go there to compete. This trip is NOT funded by WAKA or the division. But it's good to know the dates so you can be ready...

So good luck everyone! Make sure your team is aware of the changes!

Cut-throat Karaoke Mid-Season Charity!

Well, our Charity and Social organizers have whipped it all up and made it pretty, folks. Thursday, September 15th is the set date for our official Cut-Throat Karaoke Midseason Charity Party! The party is benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, so make sure you put on your generous face after you take the game face off next week!

Join us after next week's game for some free food and drink, some crazy singing, and help WAKA Dogtown support a good cause.

How it works: Purchase individual tickets, or a $20 booklet of tickets, at the door.  (Each booklet contains 20 tickets.)  Use your tickets as follows:

1 ticket lets you sing

2 tickets to make a teammate, friend, or enemy sing a song of your choosing

3 tickets to get yourself out of singing a song someone forced on you (chicken!!)

4 tickets to re-force a song on someone (aren't you mean?!)

5 tickets to refuse a song for good ... and 5 to GONG (kick a bad singer off the stage).

With the purchase of a coupon booklet, you'll receive three bonus coupons - two song refusals and one GONG - that's a $15 savings!

Join us beginning at 10pm, downstairs at Yankee Doodles.  Remember, all proceeds go to charity, so be generous, be evil, and have fun!

Everyone is invited to this event! So bring your friends, bring family! If you want to advertise the event, print up this flyer and spread the word!

Project Angeles Island

by Katie Reynolds

FOOD & CLOTHES NEEDED IMMEDIATELY FOR CHILDREN COMING TO L.A. AFTER THE HURRICANE.

Starting Thursday (Sept 8), Westside Food Bank in Santa Monica is participating in Project Angeles Island, a relief effort coordinated by City of Los Angeles, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Dream Center, FEMA, and the AFL-CIO. The Project will provide several months of shelter for some of those displaced by the hurricane. The initial phase of the Project will see 1,000 families from Louisiana and Mississippi arriving on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Bell Shelter Complex, located in a decommissioned military base, fifteen minutes from downtown Los Angeles. WSFB's job is on Monday to deliver items to supply the immediate needs of infants and young children who are members of the arriving families.

Here is a list of the needed items (all items should be new): Baby Formula (all kinds), Baby Food in Jars, Twin Sheets (flat and fitted), Blankets, Bath Towels and Face Towels, Baby Blankets, Baby Clothes, Diapers, Baby Bottles, Nipples, Bottle Washers, Pacifiers

Bring these items to the Food Bank on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Much of the needed supplies are being supplied by Temple Kehillat Israel, and much of the rest are being collected by members of the Every Child Foundation, which is holding its annual volunteer day at the Food Bank on Sunday morning.

Westside Food Bank is located in Santa Monica at 1710 22nd Street. Directions: East on Olympic Blvd., turn right at 21st Street (right after you go through the light at 20th). There's an immediate left onto a little street, which if you follow it around becomes 22nd St. The food bank is about two doors up from the corner. Bruce Rankin is the Executive Director.

For more information, call (310) 828-6016.

Winter Season Update

Should there be a winter season for Dogtown? Unlike less fortunate cities, Los Angeles weather is kickball-friendly all year. But shorter days are coming up, and games might be better suited to weekend afternoons rather than the current later start time on weekday evenings.

Are you interested in playing a winter season? You can e-mail Orion to let him know. Your captains will also bring this discussion to your team shortly, so be ready to let them know your thoughts on the subject.

Next Game Night: Sept 15th, 2005 @ 7:30pm

Game 1 - 7:30pm:

Pregnant Cheerleaders @ Greenorrhea

Game 2 - 8:30pm:

Division Bar - Yankee Doodles, 3rd St

Our WAKA Division Bar is even more important than our home field. It's the heart and center of the division's social aspect. The field is a place for team solidarity, but the division bar is where you learn that the people in the other dugout are just as good-natured and fun loving as yourselves!

So make an effort to come out after every game and let the division know that there's no ill-feelings. What happens on the field, stays on the field. What happens at the division bar are the memories we keep for many seasons to come!

Our division bar, Yankee Doodles, is located between Broadway and Santa Monica on the 3rd Street Promenade. Aside from street parking, there is $3 parking in any of the lots off 2nd and 4th street, or the mall parking lot off Broadway. For driving directions, check the map.
