Let The Playoffs Begin. . . 
The season has been drenched in rain, and we've had to settle for a seven week schedule instead of the usual eight. Hopefully you were there for the pick-up week practice games because with little warning, the playoff season has started! It's been a bit of a scramble to get things in order, but we have a schedule up and you can check it out below, but just to help clarify how it all shook out, we're going to run it down here as well. The standings, due to the thunderstorms last week, will stand as they were last week. This may be a disappointment to those that were hoping for one final week to climb the rungs just a shade more, but kickball, she is a fickle thing and we'll have to play it as it stands. No worries, everyone makes the playoffs! 
We'll start at the top. The Westside Whackers and The Pregnant Cheerleaders are tied at the top with 10 points. Since they have an identical record, we go to their head to head game and find that the Whackers smoked the Cheerleaders 14-1, so the 1st place berth goes to them. The 2nd place berth goes to the Cheerleaders. The next two slots are pretty easy. Greenorhea narrowly eeked out a lead against Tang with four wins to their three. So the 3rd place berth goes to the Greenies and the mighty Tang beat out the middle ground for a 4th place berth. And we come again to another standings tie. Not only did Ace Of Base and the Turtle Wranglers have the same record, but they also TIED each other in their head to head game. So we go to the lesser tracked Run Differentials for the season. Run Differentials are measured by the difference in points in each of their games. When we check the season's games, we find that the Turtles "out-scored" their opponents with an RD total of -4 to the Aces -9. (Remember, we're dealing with teams under .500). However, to even look at just the win columns, the Turtles outscored 5 to the Aces 3. So the Turtles get the 5th place berth and the Ace Of Base gets 6th. 
Rusty T's and The McCool Town JV Knockers almost had a tie of their own, but the McCool's extra umping paper forfeit cost them a chance to grab next-to-last and they'll have to settle for going into the playoffs as the last place berth. It's of note that had the Knockers got one more forfeit, they would have been eliminated from the playoffs. But thunderstorms have a silver lining and the Whackers don't get an easy bye. The playoffs will match the highest ranked with the lowest ranked in descending order. Higher ranked teams will get the home field advantage and will also get what the Board decided to be the "best" field conditions considering time and location. Umpires will be hand selected by the Board from the elite umps that served throughout the season. So that's the long and the short of it. Hope that clears up any confusion and good luck!
Summer Registration Is Open! 
Sick of the rain and cold nights? Tired of scraping mud out of your ears before going to Brennan's? You're in luck because next season will be starting soon! Registration for returning teams has begun and now's the time to get your registration in for the Spring '06 season! New players that have been patiently waiting in the wings should start scoping out the teams and coming out to the playoffs and pre-season warm-ups to get a few kicks in before everything starts to count. We're expecting a huge turnout this time around, don't get left waiting on the bench another season. Head over to MyWAKA and start filling out them forms. Our extra-special host bar, Brennan's has agreed to be our home away from the field again. We expect bigger parties, hotter competition and even more flip cup! If you'd like to help recruit, grab our flyer and circulate it around the office, the apartment complex, school or coffee house and spread the word about kickball! We're pleased to announce that registration for Dogtown Division's Spring 2006 season is now OPEN. We'll be back once again at Oakwood Rec Center and are pleased that Brennan's wants to have us back for a second season. There will be one week of pickup games on Wednesday May 17th before the season gets going on May 24th. The next two weeks will be the playoffs for the Winter division for anyone wanting to see kickball action before you can take the field. Returning Teams: So don't wait - Register now and keep your dynasty alive! New Groups & Players: No group is too small - you'll get matched up with other groups to form the final Teams of up to 26 people. For the best chance of *not* having people added to your team, try to have at least 8 males and 8 females approved to your team by the Registration Deadline to be determined in the next week. So whether you're a free agent, a small group, or practically team-sized already, sign on up soon! Your complete vital stats: If there are ANY questions, please email me and I'll get back to you ASAP. Also, if there is anyone interested in being on the board for the league, please let me know. Even if you don't want to be president, we can find other roles from setting up fields to planning the fun social events for the league. I hope to see everyone out soon.
End Of Season Party Announcement! We're looking at the date of May 15th. That's a MONDAY night and it's coming soon! Our party chairs have been hard at work making deals, securing locations and nailing together the final plans which will be announced soon - but let this little smudge be your first notice that Monday, May 15th around 8:30pm will be our party time. Mark your calendars!

Division Bar - It's official!
Our WAKA Division Bar, Brennan's of Marina Del Rey, is even more important than our home field. It's the heart and center of the division's social aspect. The field is a place for team solidarity, but the division bar is where you learn that the people in the other dugout are just as good-natured and fun loving as yourselves! If that doesn't sell you on it, then how about happy hour deals for WAKA players all night, every game night!? In addition to their $2.50 burgers (2 for 1 pricing), we also get $2.50 domestic tap beers (Bud & Bud Light)! What other bar can you drop $10 and get 3 beers and a burger? Nowhere, that's where. So make an effort to come out after every game and let the division know that there's no ill-feelings. What happens on the field, stays on the field. What happens at the division bar are the memories we keep for many seasons to come! Brennan's has welcomed us with open arms! We have a new home for the post-game Dogtown celebrations and libations! Once you're done with your game or cheering on other team favorites, get those cleats on over to Brennan's for some food and drink. They have a wide selection of games and live music as well as a large patio where they host turtle races every Thursday night! If nothing else, come by for a game of flip-cup and reclaim any tarnished glory you may have lost on the field by displaying your finely honed drinking-dexterity. We'll see you there! |
